A New Way to Wear Wool

The wool bodysuit we introduced in last year’s Autumn/Winter collection received an overwhelmingly warm response from our customers. Combining the comfort of fine wool against the skin with a design that can be worn both as an inner layer and as a standalone top, it has become one of the signature pieces of AROMATIQUE’s winter collection.

Inspired by the love this piece received, we have introduced two new designs this season, exploring further possibilities for wearing wool.

In a previous Journal, I shared the story behind our wool long-sleeve top, which combines delicate lace with rib-knit wool. For these two new pieces, we have chosen a different knit structure: interlock-style fine rib knit, known in Japan as fraise.

Unlike the pronounced texture of rib knitting, this fabric has a smoother, more refined surface. It gently follows the contours of the body, allowing the beauty of the neckline and silhouette to stand out. Rather than adding decorative details, we wanted the cut itself to become the defining feature of each design.

Another important consideration was the comfort and freedom of wearing each piece on its own. As with last year’s bodysuit, both new designs feature built-in bra pads. Incorporating pads into a stretch wool fabric requires careful attention to fit, positioning, and construction. By understanding the characteristics of the material and refining each detail, we sought to achieve a balance between a beautiful appearance and exceptional comfort.

The first new design is a square-neck long-sleeve top. Its clean, architectural neckline beautifully frames the décolletage, creating an elegant yet understated impression. With built-in pads, it can be worn comfortably without an additional bra. Whether layered beneath a jacket or cardigan, or styled on its own to highlight the neckline, it offers effortless versatility.

The second is a bodysuit featuring an asymmetric neckline. The unexpected line introduces a subtle sense of individuality to an otherwise minimalist design. Its close-fitting silhouette and the smooth, uninterrupted line around the waist are among the distinctive pleasures of wearing a bodysuit. It pairs beautifully with a variety of bottoms, bringing a refined touch to everyday styling.

What draws us to wool is not only the comfort of the material itself, but also its ability to move beyond the traditional role of innerwear. It offers the softness and functionality we value in garments worn directly against the skin, while also allowing us to create pieces that can be enjoyed as part of a considered wardrobe. Seeing how warmly last year’s bodysuit was embraced by our customers was especially meaningful to us, as it reflected an appreciation for this approach to design.

The delicate beauty created by combining rib-knit wool with lace, and the clean, minimalist lines made possible by the smooth surface of fine rib knit—each reveals a different expression of the same remarkable material.

We will continue to explore the possibilities of wool, creating pieces that feel beautiful against the skin and enhance the natural elegance of the wearer. I hope these new designs bring even more freedom and pleasure to the way you wear wool.

A Different Approach to Creation, Inspired by Materials

At AROMATIQUE, our approach to creating lingerie has always begun with a deep appreciation for materials. We carefully select yarns and lace from around the world, take time to develop our fabrics, and thoughtfully transform them into pieces of lingerie. Yet even with our best efforts to minimize waste, there are inevitably fabrics left behind in the production process. These are what we call fabric remnants.

As we shared in a previous Journal, we have carefully preserved these remnants in the hope of one day giving them new life. Last year, we introduced our first collection created from these materials, incorporating ideas and feedback from our customers. We were delighted by the warm response, and the experience opened our eyes to new possibilities in our approach to craftsmanship.

Encouraged by that response, our team has once again begun exploring new designs inspired by these carefully preserved materials.

Our seasonal collections typically begin taking shape about a year before their release. We research trends in Japan and abroad, review past sales, and listen closely to our customers as we gradually develop the vision and pieces we hope to introduce in the coming season. Once the design direction is established, we work with our partners around the world to source yarns, fabrics, lace, and other components. Through repeated sampling and refinement, a collection slowly comes to life.

Our remnant project, however, follows a slightly different creative process.

Here, we begin with the materials already in our hands. At Takagi Craftelier, our own sewing factory in Nagasaki, we carefully store fabrics and lace remaining after cutting, along with trims and other materials collected throughout years of production. We revisit these materials one by one, considering their textures, characteristics, and available quantities, and imagine how they might become part of something new.

While our seasonal collections begin with a design vision and the search for materials to bring it to life, this project begins with the materials themselves. But making use of what remains is never our only purpose. We also think carefully about the designs that our customers, who have continued to love and wear AROMATIQUE, would genuinely enjoy. Drawing on their feedback and our understanding of their preferences, we explore how to bring out the beauty of each material in a way that feels distinctly AROMATIQUE. Finding that balance between the possibilities of the materials and the pleasure of wearing the finished piece is one of the most rewarding aspects of this creative process.

Of course, this approach comes with its own challenges. Some remnants are relatively large, while others are small pieces left behind during cutting. Their shapes, sizes, and quantities vary, and there is not always enough of one material to produce an entire collection. Each piece requires careful consideration of how the fabric can be used, often calling for adjustments in cutting techniques and design. In some cases, the process demands even more time and craftsmanship than conventional production.

Still, we continue this project because we believe that every material holds beauty and possibilities yet to be discovered. We want to make the most of the fabrics we have so carefully chosen, rather than allowing their potential to go unrealized. It is a reflection of our values as a manufacturer involved in every stage of creation, from selecting materials to crafting the finished garment.

Among the pieces born from our previous remnant project, the cotton accordion padded short tank, triangle bra, and silk accordion camisole have been particularly well received. Part of their appeal lies in the opportunity to rediscover colors that are no longer part of our regular collections. Shades that once brought character to past collections can return years later, finding new expression through different designs. There is something special about encountering these beautiful colors once again, and we believe that sense of rediscovery is part of what makes this project so meaningful.

For our latest project, we are developing pieces for our cotton series. By bringing together fabrics in colors from past collections that are no longer in regular production with our timeless core shades, we are exploring an assortment that feels true to AROMATIQUE today. Our team is carefully considering color combinations and styles, refining ideas as the collection takes shape. We are looking forward to seeing these familiar colors find their way back to you, just as much as we hope you will enjoy discovering them again.

To cherish the materials we work with, and to continue exploring their possibilities to the very end. We hope to keep expressing the spirit of AROMATIQUE through different approaches to thoughtful creation.

使用しているのは、Super Extra Fine Merino Wool(スーパーエクストラファイン・メリノウール)100%。

The beautiful balance of wool and lace

In our previous Journal, we explored silk, a material that has long been at the heart of AROMATIQUE—not only its inherent beauty, but also how we pair it with lace and shape it to create something beautiful on the body.

This time, we turn to another natural material that is essential to AROMATIQUE in autumn and winter: wool. Often associated with sweaters and knitwear chosen simply for warmth, wool has long held a different place at AROMATIQUE. For us, it is a material to be worn directly against the skin.

We use 100% Super Extra Fine Merino Wool. While the fibers used in conventional wool are typically around 21 microns in diameter, ours measure just 15.5 microns—the equivalent of SUPER160’s—making them exceptionally fine.

The finer the wool fiber, the more supple it becomes, allowing it to bend gently against the skin and reducing the sensation of irritation. So the significance of 15.5 microns goes far beyond simply being “non-itchy.” It gives the fabric an exceptional softness and fluidity, allowing it to move naturally with the body while creating a light, delicate feel that is unexpected of wool.

Another remarkable quality of wool is its natural ability to absorb moisture and release it into the air. Rather than simply providing warmth, it helps regulate the microclimate between the skin and clothing, keeping the body comfortable throughout wear. We choose exceptionally fine Merino wool not only for warmth, but for its gentleness against bare skin and the lasting comfort it provides.

We have previously explored the qualities of wool, and why AROMATIQUE chooses it for innerwear, in an earlier Journal. This time, we would like to take that story one step further: how do we transform such delicate wool into a beautifully finished top? It is a story of material and lace, but also of designing with the female body in mind.

For this wool top, we chose a finely ribbed wool fabric. Its subtle texture gives the surface depth, while its natural elasticity allows it to move fluidly with the body and gently follow its contours. It fits close without feeling restrictive. The softness of fine Merino wool, combined with the flexibility of the ribbed knit, creates a piece that feels effortless against bare skin.

Paired with this highly flexible ribbed fabric is delicate lace. While the rib stretches generously with the movement of the body, the lace has very little stretch. Bringing together two materials with such different characteristics in a single garment requires considerable precision.

Even the slightest imbalance during sewing can cause the rib to pull, the lace to strain, or the silhouette to lose its intended shape when worn. One material stretches; the other does not. Understanding the nature of each, and bringing them together without forcing either one, is part of the craftsmanship AROMATIQUE has cultivated over many years. It is the same philosophy behind the combination of silk and lace that we introduced in our previous Journal.

Another detail we paid particular attention to in this wool top is the open back. A dramatically exposed back can easily create an impression, but simply showing more skin was never our intention.

Where should the skin begin to show? How deep should the opening be? And where should the lace begin? A shift of even a few centimeters can change the way the back appears—and the entire impression of the garment. We refined the lines carefully, searching for that precise balance where the skin is revealed, yet the overall impression remains elegant and refined.

Just as important as the open back was the proportion of lace. We considered not only the back, but also how much lace should extend over the shoulders and how much should be visible from the front. With lace, more is not necessarily more beautiful.

From the front, the piece appears refined and understated as a wool long-sleeve top. Turn slightly, and delicate lace emerges over the shoulder. From behind, the interplay between skin and lace becomes the defining detail. We designed not only where to use lace, but how much of it should be seen, allowing the piece to reveal a different expression from every angle.

Delicate wool and lace—two materials with distinctly different qualities, brought together while preserving the beauty of each. Comfort in the material, beauty on the body. This is an AROMATIQUE piece created without compromising either.
