A Different Approach to Creation, Inspired by Materials
At AROMATIQUE, our approach to creating lingerie has always begun with a deep appreciation for materials. We carefully select yarns and lace from around the world, take time to develop our fabrics, and thoughtfully transform them into pieces of lingerie. Yet even with our best efforts to minimize waste, there are inevitably fabrics left behind in the production process. These are what we call fabric remnants.
As we shared in a previous Journal, we have carefully preserved these remnants in the hope of one day giving them new life. Last year, we introduced our first collection created from these materials, incorporating ideas and feedback from our customers. We were delighted by the warm response, and the experience opened our eyes to new possibilities in our approach to craftsmanship.
Encouraged by that response, our team has once again begun exploring new designs inspired by these carefully preserved materials.
Our seasonal collections typically begin taking shape about a year before their release. We research trends in Japan and abroad, review past sales, and listen closely to our customers as we gradually develop the vision and pieces we hope to introduce in the coming season. Once the design direction is established, we work with our partners around the world to source yarns, fabrics, lace, and other components. Through repeated sampling and refinement, a collection slowly comes to life.
Our remnant project, however, follows a slightly different creative process.
Here, we begin with the materials already in our hands. At Takagi Craftelier, our own sewing factory in Nagasaki, we carefully store fabrics and lace remaining after cutting, along with trims and other materials collected throughout years of production. We revisit these materials one by one, considering their textures, characteristics, and available quantities, and imagine how they might become part of something new.
While our seasonal collections begin with a design vision and the search for materials to bring it to life, this project begins with the materials themselves. But making use of what remains is never our only purpose. We also think carefully about the designs that our customers, who have continued to love and wear AROMATIQUE, would genuinely enjoy. Drawing on their feedback and our understanding of their preferences, we explore how to bring out the beauty of each material in a way that feels distinctly AROMATIQUE. Finding that balance between the possibilities of the materials and the pleasure of wearing the finished piece is one of the most rewarding aspects of this creative process.
Of course, this approach comes with its own challenges. Some remnants are relatively large, while others are small pieces left behind during cutting. Their shapes, sizes, and quantities vary, and there is not always enough of one material to produce an entire collection. Each piece requires careful consideration of how the fabric can be used, often calling for adjustments in cutting techniques and design. In some cases, the process demands even more time and craftsmanship than conventional production.
Still, we continue this project because we believe that every material holds beauty and possibilities yet to be discovered. We want to make the most of the fabrics we have so carefully chosen, rather than allowing their potential to go unrealized. It is a reflection of our values as a manufacturer involved in every stage of creation, from selecting materials to crafting the finished garment.
Among the pieces born from our previous remnant project, the cotton accordion padded short tank, triangle bra, and silk accordion camisole have been particularly well received. Part of their appeal lies in the opportunity to rediscover colors that are no longer part of our regular collections. Shades that once brought character to past collections can return years later, finding new expression through different designs. There is something special about encountering these beautiful colors once again, and we believe that sense of rediscovery is part of what makes this project so meaningful.
For our latest project, we are developing pieces for our cotton series. By bringing together fabrics in colors from past collections that are no longer in regular production with our timeless core shades, we are exploring an assortment that feels true to AROMATIQUE today. Our team is carefully considering color combinations and styles, refining ideas as the collection takes shape. We are looking forward to seeing these familiar colors find their way back to you, just as much as we hope you will enjoy discovering them again.
To cherish the materials we work with, and to continue exploring their possibilities to the very end. We hope to keep expressing the spirit of AROMATIQUE through different approaches to thoughtful creation.
